FOOTCARE FOR PEOPLE WITH DIABETES

There are a number of ways to take good care of your feet if you’re diabetic:

Check your feet every day – look for colour changes or damage to the skin.  If you see anything unusual or have a cut, scratch or blister, contact your Podiatrist, especially if it’s not healing.

Clean and dress any cuts, scratches or wounds – remember, diabetes may affect your ability to heal and reduce your natural ability to fight bacteria.  Consequently, you should run water over the wound, dry the skin around the wound (but not the wound itself) and apply a sterile dressing before consulting your Podiatrist or GP.

Always wear footwear – if you’ve lost feeling in your feet, it’s possible that you may unknowingly damage them by standing on a sharp object and piercing the skin without realizing.

Always wear shoes that fit properly – wear shoes that do not mark the skin or cause irritation. When buying new shoes, get your feet measured.   If you feel you need a smaller size shoe because your existing size begins to feel loose, see your Podiatrist as this may be an early sign of loss of feeling in your feet.

Never sit with your feet too close to a fire – it’s also adviseable to remove a hot water bottle or switch off an electric blanket before getting into bed.

Surgery to treat corns, lesions and cysts

For some 20 years I had a problem with calluses on the ball of my left foot.  After consultations with various chiropody practices without any improvement, I had almost given up.  I would have to put up with the discomfort. When Gill Newhouse opened her surgery I thought I’d give it a try.

After 1 consultation and treatment, I went for a walk without any discomfort, something I had not been able to do for a very long time.  I now do 7-8 mile walks without any problems.

I have no hesitation in recommending anyone to have a consultation with Gill Newhouse.  It will be well worth it.

WHAT MAKES OUR PODIATRISTS SPECIAL?

Podiatry covers far more than just the routine cutting of nails and day to day care.

Every HCPC Registered Podiatrist is medically trained in their speciality and is experienced in all aspects of care from the knee downwards, from simple nail care, verrucae, corns and bunions to diabetic ulcers and gangrene.

At every visit, even if it is needed just because you are unable to cut your toe nails, a HCPC Registered Podiatrist will always check the circulation, skin tone and texture and many other signs of general health.

I had suffered a chronic heel ulcer for well over a year. Then my partner recommended Gill and her team – the rest is history!

In a matter of months, Gill and her wonderful team have managed to make significant progress towards the complete healing of my troublesome condition.

Thank you so much Gill, Laura and Claire for your professionalism and your caring ways.
